Bermuda’s international insurance and reinsurance marketplace grew rapidly in the 1980s as a response to global capacity constraints in the Excess Liability, Pollution and Directors’ & Officers’ Liability markets.

Subsequently, following the events of 9/11 and the 2004/2005 hurricane seasons, many more firms were capitalised in Bermuda to provide much needed capacity in Property Catastrophe, Terrorism, Liability and Alternative Risk. In 2005 alone, over USD16b of new capital was injected into the Bermuda insurance and reinsurance marketplace.
